City market catches fire; 46 shops gutted

At least 46 shops at a market in the city’s Badda area were gutted in a devastating fire on Thursday morning, reported UNB.

Officials at the Fire Service and Civil Defence said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop of Haji Supermarket at Madhya Badda around 5am and it soon engulfed 45 other adjoining shops.

The entire tin-shed market that housed the shops of cosmetics, grocery, fabrics and other items was burned to ashes.

On information, 10 units of firefighters from the fire service headquarters and Baridhara, Tejgaon and Khilgaon fire service stations rushed to the spot and doused the flame around 7am after two hours of hectic efforts.

Fire service sources said the losses caused by the fire was estimated to be Tk15m.

No casualty was reported in the incident.
