The district health department officials sealed off a private hospital, owned by Islami Bank and handed over two staff members to the police, after a patient died Sunday night, due to alleged wrong treatment.
Those arrested were staff nurse Afrin Khatun and store -keeper Billal Hossain.
According to family sources, Shahnaz Khatun, wife of Mantu Joarder of village Daulatput under Harinakundu upazila was rushed to the hospital in labour on Saturday. The physicians operated on her and she gave birth to a baby boy.
Later on Sunday evening, her condition deteriorated and the nurse administered an injection to stabilize her condition but Shahnaz passed away at about 8pm.
Afroza Begum, Shahnaz’s mother, has alleged that the death occurred due to the negligence of the nurse.
As news of the death spread, the relatives of the patient came and ransacked the hospital. The mayor of the municipality Saidul Karim Mintu and Kazi Jalal Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station brought the situation under control. Civil Surgeon Dr Nasrin Sultana sealed off the hospital and later the police arrested the two staff members, according to sources.
Dr Marfia Khatun, the physician on duty at the hospital said the surgery had been successful and both the mother and child were in good health. The death of the mother was unexpected, she added.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kalchand Shingha, when contacted, confirmed the incident and said the authorities have sealed the hospital for an indefinite period.
