Indian Border Security Force (BSF) picked up two Bangladeshi nationals from the border area in Fulbari upazila of the district on Saturday morning.
The victims were Mizanur Rahman and Al-Amin, both are residents of Gorok Mandal village along the border.
Lt Col Ziaul Haque Khaled, Commanding officer of 45th battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said BSF troops of Kharida Haridas camp picked up the duo while they were crossing the no man’s land to meet their relatives on the other side of the border around 7am.
He also said that a letter has been sent to the BSF officials for holding a flag meeting over the incident.
Documents published by both Bangladeshi and Indian non-governmental organisations suggest that the BSF commits abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and ill-treatment of both Indian and Bangladeshi border residents.
In December 2010, Human Rights Watch documented nearly 1,000 killings by the BSF over the last decade.
BSF is mandated to address illegal activities, especially narcotics smuggling, human trafficking for sex work, and transporting fake currency and explosives. However, instead of arresting suspects and handing them over to the police for trial, they have taken it upon themselves to punish suspects, say human rights activists.
