Dhaka Theatre, one of the leading theatre troupes in the country, will stage its acclaimed production ‘Binodini’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 7pm Sunday.
Directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff, the one-act play features Shimul Yousuff as Binodini Dasi, the pioneering actress of 19th century who had an outstanding contribution to shaping the theatre scene of the Bengal region.
Based on the autobiography of Binodini Dasi, Saymon Zakaria scripted the play under the guidance of late theatre icon Selim Al Deen.
The play portrays the rise of Binodini Dasi as an actress, who emerged from the dark society. For over a century, she has inspired women to fight against all odds and break all barriers to make their mark on stage as actresses, despite the fact that her life was never smooth and happy.
In the short span of her performing life, Binodini acted in 80 plays and portrayed 90 characters. “Binodini,” the 31st production of Dhaka Theatre, is a tribute to Binodini Dasi for her ground-breaking role establishing theatre as a profession for Bengali women theatre activists.
