Buzuruk Jamalpur High School has been operating for the past five months at two separate locations in Sadullapur upazila due to antagonism between two groups of teachers.
Though students are attending classes at both the old and new campuses, they say they are comfortable and cannot give full attention to their studies.
As a result of the feud, salaries of teachers and employees have been withheld for the past five months.
The school was established in 1993 and in 1999 was brought under the monthly payment order (MPO).
In January 2012, relations deteriorated between headmaster Shahidul Islam and the members of school managing committee regarding the alleged embezzlement of school funds.
The committee suspended the headmaster in April 2012, and appointed assistant teacher Jahidul Islam as headmaster.
Tensions spread among teachers over Shahidul’s suspension, and two factions developed.
A clash took place on school premises between the supporters of two groups in January 2013, injuring at least 16 people, including teachers of both groups.
Shahidul Islam built a shed on his own land a kilometre away from the school, and at the end of January he started holding academic activities there with eight teachers and several students.
Meanwhile, acting headmaster Jahidul was conducting academic activities with six teachers and several students in the old school building.
An assistant teacher, SM Asaduzzaman, said teachers and students were divided into two groups, hindering the academic activities of the students. Due to the conflict between the rival groups, teachers have not been paid for last five months, causing untold suffering to their families, he said.
Parents are in a dilemma as to which school they should send their children, he added.
When contacted, Jahidul and suspended headmaster Shahidul each blamed the other for the current situation.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Golam Mowla said he had recently visited the campuses separately and informed the district education officer about the matter.
The district education officer M Azahar Ali said the matter had been discussed extensively at a recent monthly meeting of the district development coordination committee, and that necessary measures would be taken to solve the problem.
