A Saudi woman has created history by being the first woman from her country to reach the Everest summit, the BBC reported on Saturday.
Raha Moharrak went as part of a four-person expedition, which also includes the first Qatari man and the first Palestinian man, to attempt reaching the summit.
The 25-year-old, who is currently based in Dubai, is not only the first Saudi woman to attempt the climb but also the youngest Arab to make it to the top of Everest.
The four-person expedition started its mission in an aim to raise $1m for education projects in Nepal.
Originally from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia – known for its conservative Islamic society which practices heavy restrictions on women – Moharrak had to break a lot of barriers to achieve this goal, her team said.
According to a biography on the expedition website, Moharrak had a difficult time trying to convince her family to agree to her mission. She said it was “as great a challenge as the mountain itself." Her family however fully supports her now.
The BBC quoted her to have said, “I really don’t care about being the first. So long as it inspires someone else to be second."
