The police yesterday gave around Tk800,000 to each family of the two policemen killed while resisting the violence unleashed by Hefazat-e-Islam men in Narayanganj on May 6.
Deputy Inspector General (Dhaka Range) of Police SM Mahfuzul Huq Nuruzzaman handed over the amount, two crests and two certificates to the wives of the slain police – Nayek Firoz Khan and Constable Mohammad Zakaria – at a civic condolence meeting at the Maksudpur upazila auditorium in the afternoon, reported UNB.
Among others, Deputy Commissioner Khalilur Rahman, Police Super of Faridpur Jamil Hossain and Pro VC of Uttara University Prof Dr Yasmin Lekha addressed the meeting chaired by Gopalganj Police Super Mizanur Rahman.
On May 4, a 26-member police team led by Inspector Shyamal Nath went to Dhaka from Gopalganj on the eve of the Hefajat’s Dhaka siege programme on May 5.
They were later posted in Narayanganj from Dhaka where they performed their duties at Shimrail Intersection under Siddhirganj of Narayanganj district.
Zakaria, resident of Batikamari village under Maksudpur upazila, and Firoz of Naopara village under Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur district, were killed when activists of Hefazat-e-Islam clashed with the police on in the early hours of May 6.
