Rhino 'dies' at Dhaka Zoo

One of the rhinoceroses recently imported by the Dhaka Zoo from South Africa died yesterday.

Of the two, the male rhino died, which was brought to the Zoo in July, 2012.

A three-member probe committee has been formed by the Department of Livestock (DLS) to find out the reason of its death.

The committee will submit its report to DLS within three working days, confirmed the acting director general of the DLS, Dr Mosaddek Hossain, while talking to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

Dr Maksudul Hassan, the acting curator of the Dhaka Zoo told the Dhaka Tribune, the zoo authority procured the two rhinos from an international animal supplier company ‘Falcon International’ last year, at an expense of Tk15m.

He said, the zoo authority had found some scars, probably from beating on the dead rhino’s body on May 13 and it stopped taking food since.

The DLS had formed a medical team to treat and cure it, but, no sign of physical changes were observed.

“We communicated with our South African suppliers as well. But, before getting any response, it died on Wednesday,” he said.

The acting curator said, however, a post-mortem report after its death confirmed that the rhino died of haemorrhage in its head. However, he could not confirm that how it had hurt its head and neck, saying, it may have got injured at night while fighting with the other rhino or by banging its head against wall.
