CEC hopeful of all-party polls

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed apprised President Abdul Hamid of the ongoing activities of the Election Commission (EC), including an updating of the voters’ list and delimitation of constituencies, when he called on him at Bangabhaban on Monday.

Emerging from the meeting, the CEC told journalists that he was hopeful that all political parties would participate in the next general polls.

“We are taking all preparations to hold the Dhaka City Corporations polls as well as the next general election,” he said.

The CEC was accompanied by all four election Commissioners – Mohammad Abdul Mobarak, Mohammad Abu Hafiz, Zabed Ali and Shah Nawaz.

During the meeting, the CEC apprised the president of the progress made in updating voters’ list and national identity cards with photographs, reforming electoral laws and delimitation of the existing constituencies.

He told the president that the Election Commission had conducted a total of 5,636 polls in different categories during the tenure of the present government. The polls include presidential, parliamentary by-election, city corporation, upazila, municipality and union parishad polls.

Rakibuddin also discussed the progress made in four ongoing EC projects – Construction of Upazila and Regional Server Station for Election Database, Strengthening of Election Management in Bangladesh, Construction of Election Resource Centre and Identification System for Enhancing Access to Service.

President Abdul Hamid expressed satisfaction over the activities of the commission. Secretaries of the president’s office were present at the meeting.
