The cyclone “Mahasen” over the Southeast Bay and adjoining areas has moved north-westward sand is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northwesterly direction.
The cyclone was located at about 1,455 kilometres south-southwest of Chittagong port, 1,360 kilometres south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar and 1,390 kilometres south of Mongla port at 12pm Sunday, Bangladesh Meteorological Department said.
The maximum sustained wind speed is expected to rise to 88km per hour. The sea will remain very rough near the storm centre.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast. They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea until further instructions.
Authorities have been asked to maintain cautionary danger signal three at all sea ports of the country.
The United States military said that the cyclone might sweep through the Rakhine province of Myanmar and adjacent coastal areas of Bangladesh by Tuesday afternoon.
