Mobile court destroys 4,500kg tainted mangoes

A mobile court in the sadar upazila of the district destroyed 4,500kg of contaminated mangoes and fined its owner Tk20,000 yesterday morning.

The mangoes were tainted with carbide, a chemical used by traders to artificially ripen green mangoes and other fruit in order to sellthemearly.

Emdadul Hoque Sheikh, the officer in charge of Kotwali police station, said they seized a truck loaded with 4,500kg of carbide mixed mangoes from Murali intersection on the outskirts of the district town on Friday evening, reported UNB.

The mangoes were owned by Abdul Malik, a resident of Sagordari village in Keshabpur upazila of the district.

Later, a mobile court headed by Shamimur Rahman, sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and executive magistrate, disposed of the mangoes by throwing them into a garbage can.
