Nor’wester disrupts power supply in Moulvibazar

People in the district are suffering from severe power shortages as various supply and feeder lines were damaged by nor’westers that swept through the region in the last couple of days.

According to Power Development Board, due to nor’westers, several insulators had been either burnt or blasted, electrical wires and feeder lines were damaged and electrical poles broken down. In some places, trees fell on power lines, cutting off supply chains.

Shailen Roy, a resident of Saiarpur village in Moulvibazar, said, there has been little power in the last few days. “There was no electricity for a whole day starting from 2pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday. The situation was no better in the previous three days either.”

Sources in Kamalganj upazila said, there was no power supply for 22 straight hours since Wednesday night because of structural damages to 10 electrical poles, a transmission tower and a large number of metres caused by a nor’wester earlier in the day.

Meanwhile at the Rajnagar upazila, power supply has been irregular since the middle of last week.

In Kulaura Sadar and Karmodha unions of Kulaura upazila, about one thousand villagers have been living in the dark since their feeder lines were damaged by a severe nor’wester on April 15.

Ratan Kumar Biswas, executive engineer of Moulvibazar PDB office, said, “It takes five to six hours to locate the faulty points in a supply line because many such lines have gone through uneven areas such as haors and hills.

“Several nor’westers lashed the district in the last few days causing damages to various supply lines. We are working hard to repair those damages and smooth out the power supply.”
