The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) director Khandaker Enamul Basir and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Mizanur Rahman have continued to put blame to one another over a bribery scandal to the tune of Tk40 lakh that was allegedly transferred in exchange for information.
The ACC director Basir, who was suspended by the commission for leaking a probe report conducted against DIG Mizan on charge of allegations of amassing illegal wealth, said the allegation of bribery is false.
“Prove it with experts,” he told reporters at his office on Tuesday.
Asked about a phone conversation with DIG Mizanur Rahman, Basir said it is fictitious and challenged DIG Mizan to provide evidence in support his claims.
DIG Mizan in a television interview on Sunday claimed that ACC Director Enamul Basir took Tk40 lakh in bribes from him promising that he would be dropped from the allegations.
Meanwhile, DIG Mizan has also added he does have all of the audio clips and he is ready to submit them if the anti graft watchdog asked him to do so.
Speaking to reporters at his residence in Dhaka, Mizan said everything will be cleared off as soon as the ACC verifies authenticity of the audio clipping.
Responding to a query on why he leaked the audio, Mizan said he had to do it in an effort to relieve him from accusations.
Replying to a question on why he bribed the ACC director, Mizan said: "The ACC director pressured him in many ways to do so."
“When I met him and found him to be a corrupt official, I did so to prove it.”
“I withdrew money from bank, loaned money from my relatives. I do have all documents and will present it to the probe committee at the right time,” said Mizan.
The ACC on Monday said it has suspended its director Khandaker Enamul Basir and removed him from the probe team that was investigating the wealth of DIG Mizanur.
Earlier on Monday, ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmood said; "Disciplinary action has been taken against Basir for breaching rules of service. A separate departmental inquiry will be conducted in connection with bribery allegations."
