4 suspected robbers killed in Jessore 'gunfights'

Four suspected members of two robber gangs have been killed in alleged gunfights triggered by factional feuds in Jessore’s Sadar and Jhikargachha upazilas. None of the deceased, believed to aged between 28 and 35 years, could be identified immediately. In one of the incidents, two factions of a robber gang fought a gunfight near Chatala Bazar in Jhikargachha around 5am on Saturday. Sources at Jessore General Hospital said police brought the bodies of two people, both in their late 20s, had been shot in the head. Jhikargachha police station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam said they had been tipped-off about a gang of robbers committing robbery in the early hours of Saturday. When police reached the spot, they found the bodies of two robbers. A foreign pistol, two bullets and three machetes were found at the scene, the SI said. He said the two men might have been victims of a factional clash over sharing the loot. In a separate development, another alleged gunfight took place at Nongorpur Shrine in the Sadar upazila beside the Jessore-Magura road in the morning. Kotwali police station's OC Abdul Bashar said they had received reports that a gang of robbers were engaged in a gunfight among themselves in the wee hours of Saturday. Police recovered two bodies from the spot, both had been shot in the chest. Two firearms, two bullets, five cartridges, two pairs of earrings and a gold chain were found on the bodies.
