Six people, including a boy, have been killed in violence centring on the second phase of the Union Parishad election in Dhaka, Jamalpur, Chittagong and Jessore.
The deceased are Shubho, 10, of Keraniganj area in Dhaka, Rafiqul Islam, 50, of Jamalpur, Snaullah Mia, 26, Ibrahim, 25, and Jamal, 50, of Chittagong, and food vendor Mujibur Rahman Bishey, of Jessore.
Shubho was caught in the line of fire between two rival candidates in Keraniganj.
Later, he died while being taken to a hospital.
UNO Abul Bashar Md Fokhruzzaman said: “The incident took place at the polling centre in Modhuchor Government Primary School of Hazratpur union around 10:30am.”
Mijibur was killed in violence centring on the election in Chachra Union Parishad in Jessore.
Detective Branch (DB) of police OC Ali Ahmed Hashmi said a group of miscreants hurled bombs in front of the polling centre at Bhaturia Government Primary School around 11am on Thursday.
“Mijubur was selling food outside the polling centre when the explosions took place. He was injured in the blast.”
In retaliation, police fired shots to bring the situation under control.
The DB official said Mujibur was pronounced dead by the doctors when taken to the Jessore 250-bed Hospital.
Following the incident, Presiding Officer Md Salim postponed the voting in the centre.
Rafiqul Islam, 50, died when a stone struck on his head during a clash between two member candidates at Uttar Balurchar Government Primary School centre in Shyampur Union Parisahd of Jamalpur.
However, Melandoho police station OC Nasimul Islam claimed that Rafiqul Islam died of cardiac arrest.
Elections to the centre was later suspended following the incident.
Sanaullah, Ibrahim and Jamal were killed in a clash between two member candidates in Bauria Union Parishad elections at Sandwip upazila in Chittagong.
Executive Magistrate Md Obaidur Rahman confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the death.
At least five others including a police constable received bullet wounds during the clash that took place around 3:45pm Thursday.
