Voting in 2nd phase of Union Parishad polls ends

The second phase of the election in 639 Union Parishads across the country has been ended amid violence in several polling centres that claimed at least six lives.

Polling began at 8am and ended at 4pm on Thursday without any break.

Of the 3,114 chairman candidates, 1,559 are political candidates and 1,555 are independent.  

A total of 6,799 member candidates (reserved seats for women) and 23,377 general member candidates are participating in the race.

EC Commissioner M Shahnewaz said: “To ensure a free and fair manner in today’s polls, the EC will stay with law enforcers in every step to stop irregularities.” 

The Election Commission will hold the UP polls in six phases. The third phase of the polls will be held on April 23, fourth phase on May 7, fifth phase on May 28, and the final phase on June 4.

Polls will be held in 711 union parishads in the third phase, 728 union parishads in the fourth phase, 714 union parishads in the fifth, and 660 union parishads in the sixth phase.

The first phase of the election in 739 union parishads was held on March 22.
