155 polling stations risky in Dinajpur

The election commission have identified 155 polling stations out of 318 as risky in five upazilas of the district in the second phase of the UP elections to be held on March 31.

According to local sources, the election will be held at 35 union councils in Nawabganj, Birampur, Phulbari, Kaharole and Bochaganj upazilas on the day.

A total of 149 candidates are vying for chairman posts, 1,173 for member, and 417 for woman-reserved seats.

Meanwhile, five candidates have been elected uncontested as member in Khanpur, Mukundapur, Kazihal and Kushdaho union councils.

Sources said in Nawbganj upazila, 40 candidates have been nominated for chairman posts, 127 for woman-reserved seats and 317 for member posts. 165,108 voters will cast their votes in 81 centres. Of these, 66 centres have been declared risky.

In Birampur, there are 32 candidates running for chairman, 73 for member, and 215 for woman-reserved posts in seven union councils. A total of 127, 515 voters will cast their votes in 63 centres. Of these, 30 are risky.

In Phulbari, 24 candidates are vying for chairman posts, 77 for member and 210 for woman-reserved seats. 128,451 voters will cast their votes in 64 centres where 19 are thought to be risky.

In Kaharle, 31 candidates are vying for chairman posts, 71 for woman-reserved seats and 225 for member posts. 110, 913 voters will cast votes in 54 centres. Of them, 16 centres are risky.

In Bochaganj, 22 candidates are vying for chairman posts, 69 for woman-reserved seats and 206 for member posts. 114,593 voters will cast their votes in 54 centres where 24 have been declared risky.

According to sources of Detective Branch of Police, there are 318 centres in 35 unions. Of these centres, 155 have been declared very risky.

Election Commissioner Nuruzzaman Talukder said at least 7,111 members of law-enforcement will be deployed to hold the election in a peaceful environment.

Superintendent of Police Ruhul Amin said: “We have taken all sorts of steps to hold the election peacefully.”
