A Narayanganj court has sent Santrash Nirmul Mancha Convener Rafiur Rabbi to jail in a case filed over cheque forgery.
The court of First Additional District and Sessions Judge Miazi Mohammad Shahidul Alam Chowdhury passed the order on Tuesday morning, rejecting Rabbi's bail plea.
Earlier in April 2012, Jalal Uddin Ahmed, the uncle-in-law of Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman, filed the case against Rabbi, the father of slain schoolboy Tanvir Mohammad Twaki.
According to the case statement, Rabbi gave two cheques for Tk70 lakh to Jalal on February 8, 2012, but the cheques bounced.
According to Rabbi's lawyer, a Shamim Quadri bought 30 decimals of land from Rabbi and later sold it to Jalal.
Later, a meeting decided that Jalal would return the land to Rabbi, taking Tk70 lakh.
Rabbi gave two blank cheques to Jalal's lawyer who was present at the meeting, claimed Rabbi's lawyer.
Later, the cheques bounced in the bank.
Rabbi's lawyers however said Jalal did not return the land to his client; rather he himself wrote the cheques for Tk70 lakh, which bounced at the bank.
The cultural activist was sentenced to a one-year imprisonment in the case.
The court also fined Rabbi, the Narayanganj unit convener of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port, Tk2.10 crore.
Of this amount, he was asked to pay Tk1.4 crore to the plaintiff and Tk70 lakh to the government exchequer.
Later, Rabbi filed an appeal with the High Court against the verdict and submitted Tk35 lakh.
On February 15 this year, the HC rejected his plea and sent all relevant documents to the district court.
The documents reached the court on March 13 and the court asked Rabbi to surrender.
