Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday said a community and beat policing system had been launched to remove the fear of police from the minds of people.
Speaking at a programme at the DMP headquarters in the capital, he said: “A sense of fear about crimes and police exists in the minds of people. We are now working to remove those fears.
“We have introduced a community and beat policing system in every police station as part of the initiative to remove the fear people have about the police department and to fight criminal activities as well.
“Each police station will have three to seven beats and there will be an in-charge for every beat. The in-charge will work for the beat for at least two years,” explained Asaduzzaman.
He said a friendly relation between police and the public was one of the tools to remove fears from people’s minds.
He also emphasised the need for police accountability to establish good governance.
In reply to a question, he said: “We follow a zero-tolerance policy if any of our officials is found misusing his power or getting involved in criminal acts.”
Rangs Motors Limited donated two vehicles to the DMP at the programme.
