Biman Bangladesh Airlines carried around 20,19,665 more passengers in 2014-15 fiscal year, which was 28% more in the previous year.
National flag carrier came up with the disclosure during its Annual General Meeting held at the Biman head office in the city on Sunday.
According to the meeting, Biman transported 43,924 tonnes cargo, which was 30.92% more than the previous fiscal year.
Biman gained a profit of over Tk272 crore during 2014-15 fiscal year just after incurring losses from the previous fiscals from 2009-10 to 2013-14 in a row.
State-owned Biman earned Tk4,624 crore revenue while the airliner earned around Tk551 crore from ground handling department.
Biman flight catering centre made profit over Tk28 crore and poultry department made a profit of over Tk4 crore.
During this 2014-15 fiscal year, national flag carrier spent US$1675 million to purchase new generation four Boeing 777 300 ER aircraft.
Meanwhile, state-run airliner paid $896.74 million to the Boeing company. Out of the amount, Biman paid $183.30m from is own exchequer while rest of the amount came from bank loan.
A high official of Biman told the Dhaka Tribune that the airliner made this profit as it made some important decisions including phase out of old DC-10 aircrafts, induction of new aircraft in its fleet, increasing flight frequency in profitable routes and discontinuation of loss making routes.
Though Biman incurred a loss of over Tk31 crore in the first six months of the last year even after the new CEO, Kyle Haywood, had been hired to rescue the aviation business.
A series of irregularities and mismanagement are attributed to be the reasons behind the loss, said a source at Biman.
Kyle joined the Biman in last January. In February, Biman incurred a loss of TK7.97 crore while losses stood at around Tk16.91 crore in June.
The Biman board of directors, the highest policy-making body, became worried after consecutive losses in last six months despite its initiatives to rein in poor performance.
At one stage Biman forced to appoint Asaduzzaman, director (engineering) as acting CEO in absent of Kyle to recover losses.
After appointment of acting CEO, the airlines has reduced its net loss and turned into a profitable airlines.
