Ecnec approves Tk398cr for public officials accommodation

The government will build 672 residential flats for public officials and employees at a cost of over Tk398 crore in Narayanganj.

The project got approval of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) in its meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at the NEC conference yesterday.  

The Public Works Department (PWD) under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works will implement the project by June 2019.

Under the project, some eight 15-storey buildings would be built on 12.84 acres of land of PWD at Aliganj, which is barely five kilometres from the city’s Jatrabari area to address the accommodation problem of the government officials and employees.

Of the 672 flats, some 168 with 1,250 square feet, 168 with 1,000 square feet, 168 with 800 square feet and 168 with 650 square feet would be constructed.

About the project, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the stance of the present government is very clear on solving accommodation problem faced by the government officials and employees.

He said such kind of accommodation facilities would be built in the divisional cities, too. Considering the growing demand, multi-storey buildings would also be built at upazila level for the government officials and employees, he added.

The above construction project was one of the approved six projects worth Tk1,219 crore. Of the total project cost, Tk894.92 crore will come from the national coffer, Tk84.19 crore from the project related public agencies and Tk240.15 crore from the development partners.

The ECNEC also gave nod to another project titled “Embankment Protection of Rajapur and East Ilisha Union under Bhola Sadar upazila from the erosion of River Meghna” with Tk279.42 crore.

Bangladesh Water Development Board under the Ministry of Water Resources will implement the project by June 2020.

The other approved projects are Tk324.34 crore poverty alleviation initiative at northern region (1st revised), Tk128.81 crore expansion of Rajshahi BSCIC industrial estate, Tk54.41 crore conducting inter-relation affairs survey of ecosystem of haor and rivers and Tk34.12 crore developing management framework of listed water bodies and permanent water bodies, fisheries development in greater Jessore.
