China opens to consortium to build Paira port

China is open to become a part of a consortium to build Paira deep sea port in Bangladesh.

“'For the cooperation with other countries for deep sea port, we are open,” Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ma Mingqiang said at a DCAB Talk at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday.

Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh [DCAB] organised the programme.

He said the owner of the port is the Bangladesh government and its people. “We are contractors only or to the maximum operators only,” he said.

“If there is a port of course we are willing with any country. If there is willingness to cooperate we can do it together of course we are here with sincerity.”

Some Chinese companies showed interest in the Paira project, he added.

About Sonadia deep sea port, he said two Chinese companies showed interest in the  project but it is no longer priority project of the government.

About the killing of two foreign nationals last year, he said before investigation is finished, it is not fair to prejudge the result.

“So, I resort to the police, RAB to find what is all about, whether it is a terrorist attack, whether ISIS exists or not in the country.”

About military engagement, he said the cooperation between the two armed forces is constituted one of the important pillars of the bilateral relations.

“We want to see your defence capacity to build up gradually.”
