At least five people, including four activists of Jubo League, were killed when a picnic bus rammed into a human haulier in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur yesterday.
The deceased are Jubo League activists Tufan Khan, Nazrul Islam, Anis Hossain, and Md Jiron, and human haulier driver Tuku Sheikh.
Witnesses said the incident took place around 7pm yesterday as the activists of the ruling party's youth wing were returning home from the district town after attending a jubilant procession on the occasion of the 97th birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Tuku died on the spot; Tufan, Nazrul and Anis succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Meherpur General Hospital and Jiron died on his way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said district Police Superintendent Hamidul Alom.
“Twelve more activists of Jubo League have also sustained injuries. Of them, Rashidul Islam, Meser Ali, Monirul Islam and Hasibul Islam have been shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while the rest are now undergoing treatment at Meherpur General Hospital.”
