Fazle Kabir has been appointed as Bangladesh Bank governor, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said.
Kabir has been serving Sonali Bank as chairman.
Fazle Kabir, former finance secretary, will join his job after returning home from New York, USA on March 18, the minister said.
The appointment came hours after the resignation of Atiur Rahman as BB governor.
Until Kabir’s return to home, Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Abul Kashem will serve the central bank as acting governor, said Muhith.
On Tuesday morning, Atiur submitted the resignation letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at PMO in the wake of the recent hacking of Bangladesh Bank's reserve fund, PM's press secretary Ihsanul Karim told the Dhaka Tribune.
On February 4, hackers stole more than $80 million from Bangladesh Bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and wired it to bank accounts in the Philippines.

On February 29, the Philippine Daily Inquirer broke the story of a possible $100m digital bank robbery of BB fund.
Fazle Kabir started his professional career in the Bangladesh Civil Service as an assistant traffic superintendent in the Bangladesh Railway back in 1980. Later he joined the administration service in 1983.
During his 34 years tenure in the civil bureaucracy, he served as deputy commissioner and district magistrate of Kishoreganj, joint secretary in the ministry of education, director general of the National Academy for Planning and Development, director general of the BCS Administration Academy and secretary of Railways Ministry before joining as finance secretary in 2012.
Fazle Kabir obtained BA (Hons) and Master Degree in Economics from the University of Chittagong.
He is married to Mahmuda Sharmin Benu who is presently serving as an additional secretary at the Ministry of Public Administration.
They are blessed with one son Tanveer Kabir, who is at present pursuing for an MBA Degree at the Institute of Business Administration of Dhaka University.
