SC stays Mirza Abbas' release from jail

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed BNP senior leader Mirza Abbas’ bail in a graft case for a week, halting his release from the prison.

A five-member bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Monday afternoon.

The court issued the stay order in response to a petition filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The apex court also asked the ACC to file a leave to appeal petition against the High Court’s bail order within a week.

On March 9, the High Court granted bail to Abbas in the graft case.

On March 6, 2014, ACC filed the graft case with Shahbagh Police Station on charge of causing the state a loss of Tk16 crore by allocating seven acres of Rajuk's land to a journalists' cooperative society at a lower rate.

Mirza Abbas was the housing and public works minister of BNP led four-party alliance government during the period.
