Schoolboy’s death in road accident sparks protests

Local people blocked road and staged demonstrations on the Dhamairhat-Joypurhat Road at Chakmoyram in Dhamairhat upazila protesting the death of a schoolboy in a road accident yesterday morning.

Yasir Arafat Swadhin, 12, son of Tuku Hossain of Pharshipara village of the upazila and a Class VI student of Chakmoyram High School, was killed when a stone-laden truck hit his bi-cycle on the road around 9am while he was returning home, said Shikder Mohammad Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Dhamairhat police station.

As the news spread, local people took to the streets and torched two trucks, including the killer one. They also put up barricade on the road.

On information, police and fire fighters rushed to the spot.

Police charged baton on the agitators and opened fire which left 14 people injured, alleged local people.

The fire fighting team doused the fire.

On information, pouro mayor Aminur Rahman and upazila nirbahi officer Hossain Ahmed went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Additional police forces were deployed in the area.
