Tamim Iqbal's hurricane knock went in vain as persistent rain played foul in the 2016 World Twenty20 yesterday.
Following the cancellation of the Netherlands-Oman tie owing to heavy rainfall, the Bangladesh-Ireland encounter was also called off as the rain-gods intervened in the picturesque city of Dharamsala. All the four Group A sides had to be content with the share of the points.
With an identical one point from two matches, both the Irish and the Dutch have been eliminated in the first hurdle.
With three points from the same number of outings, Bangladesh and Oman, on the other hand, have it all to play for. Their winner-takes-all clash tomorrow will decide which team from Group A join hosts India, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand in the main round of the global showpiece event.
The weather forecast makes for grim reading though. According to forecasts, the hilly venue will experience continuous rain in the next two weeks, putting the Bangladesh-Oman match in jeopardy.
The Tigers fans however, need not worry as their side have a better net run rate. In the event of another abandonment, it is Bangladesh (+0.4) who will go through at Oman's (+0.2) expense.
Yesterday, the Tigers managed a brisk 94/2 from eight overs in a 12-over per side affair before rain had its final say.
Ireland skipper William Porterfield won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first and opening batsmen Tamim and Soumya Sarkar made a blistering start to their innings. Tamim played the role of the aggressor, striking a magnificent six over the fine-leg region to start off proceedings.
Soumya, in contrast, was riding his luck as he was dropped twice, on nought and 10 respectively.
Soumya however, finally departed after scoring 20 off 13 balls but Tamim continued to flay the Irish bowlers to all parts of the ground and was later joined by Sabbir Rahman (13* off nine).
Tamim made 47 runs off just 26 balls with the help of three fours and four sixes before being outfoxed by Irish left-arm spinner George Dockrell.
