At least nine people were killed in separate road accidents that took place in the capital, Khulna, Chittagong, Bagerhat and Savar yesterday.
Two men were killed in two separate road accidents in Dhaka in the morning.
Sub-inspector Md Julhas, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp, said a vehicle ran over Md Habibullah, 24, while he was crossing the road at Technical intersection in Mirpur around 5:15am, leaving him critically injured. As locals whisked off the injured to DMCH, doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, two people, including CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Kalu and his passenger Ahmed Ali, 50, were injured as the vehicle was hit by a truck from behind at Matuyail intersection in Jatrabari area around 6:30am, the SI added.
As locals rescued the duo and took them to DMCH, doctors declared Ahmed Ali dead.
In Khulna, a rickshaw-van puller was killed and two others were injured in a road mishap at Mostormore intersection in Harintana thana on Khulna -Mongla Highway.
The accident took place around 10am when a Khulna-bound bus knocked the rickshaw van from behind.
The van puller Masum Gazi, 35, who was coming to zero point area carrying passengers, fell down on the street. Local people rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) where the duty doctor declared him dead.
In Chittagong, a youth was killed when a covered van ran him over at AK Khan Intersection area in the morning.
The deceased was Md Rashed, 28, son of Abdul Kuddus, a resident of Fakir Talukder Bari of AK Khan area in the city.
Police said Rashed was critically injured when a covered van knocked him down while he was crossing the road at AK Khan Intersection area at around 9am. He was taken to CMCH where the on-duty physicians declared him dead.
In Bagerhat, a man was killed in a road accident in front of Shahid Smirity College on the Bagerhat-Fakirhat Highway in Nawapara Town area.
The deceased is Mehdi Hasan, 52, driver of a Mahendra transport.
Police said the accident occurred when a Khulna-bound covered van coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with a Mahendra transport in the area, leaving Mehdi dead on the spot.
In Mirersarai, two people were killed and eight others injured at Bariar area on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in the early hours of the day.
Md Sujon, 17, and Abdul Karim, 50, died on the spot when a truck turned turtle in which they were traveling.
Our Savar correspondent said two people, including a union parishad chairman were killed in separate road accidents.
Suspended Gazipur mayor Mannan faces road accident
Suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan and his three companions suffered minor injuries in a road accident in the city’s Meghdubi area in the afternoon.
Central Swechchhasebak Dal leader Hasibur Rahman Munna said a truck crashed into the jeep of Mannan in the area on his way to the city from his capital residence.
The accident left the suspended mayor, his personal assistant M Billal Hossain, Munna and the jeep driver injured.
