Bangshal ASI arrested over shooting cable operator

An assistant sub-inspector of Bangshal police has been arrested for reportedly shooting a cable operator in the capital’s Khilgaon area following a dispute over unpaid bills.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon after the cable operator and the police official locked in an altercation over paying the dues of cable television.

Khilgaon police station OC Mainul Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: “A team of Bangshal police later arrested the ASI, Shamim Reza, and handed him over to Khilgaon police.”

Shamim lives with his family on the fourth floor of an apartment building in Khilgaon’s Nandiparha.

Victim Al-Amin was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with a bullet wound on his back immediately after the incident.

DMCH Emergency Department doctor Md Nasir told the Dhaka Tribune: “The victim was released after primary treatment as his wounds were not so critical.”

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Al Amin said: “Usually three people of our company collect the cable television bills from the area. Whenever any of us knocked Shamim for the bill earlier, he said the payment had already been made to another person.

“Shamim had defaulted for some four to five months and today [Friday] we went to his flat all together to collect the dues. At one stage of argument, he slapped me and when my colleagues protested it, he brought his service pistol out, and shot me.”

Detective Branch Constable Anwar Hossain, who also lives in the same building, later took Amin to the hospital, said witnesses.

Asked whether an ASI was allowed to take his service pistol home, Bangshal police station OC Nure E Alam said: “Shamim was on duty when the incident happened. He went home for a while informing the police station.”

Khilgaon police said the pistol has been seized from Shamim's possession.
