A minor girl was killed as she sank down into a sand hole at Bijoyrampur on the bank of Bupzera Harihar River in Manirampur of Jessore on yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Arifa Khatun, 7, daughter of construction worker Nazim Uddin, a resident of Bijoyrampur village.
Locals said Arifa was playing on the bank of the river in the morning. At one stage, she fell into a sand hole and died on the spot getting trapped inside around 7:30am.
A lot of sand holes have been created on the river’s bank due to accumulation of sand lifted illegally from the riverbed, locals alleged.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Manirampur upazila Kamrul Hasan said stern actions will be taken against those responsible for the nuisance resulting from illegal sand extraction.
