Stocks edge higher, volatility continues

Stocks edged higher amid volatility yesterday, driven by low cap issues.

The market, however, continued to move between red and green zones entire day but finally closed slightly higher with decline in volume of trade.

The benchmark index DSEX rose 10 points or 0.3% higher to close at 4,453. With this rise, it gained 18 points in the last two straight sessions.

The Shariah index DSES moved up over 2 points to 1,080. The blue chip comprising index DS30 was up 6 points or 0.4% to 1,709.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange Selective Category Index CSCX settled at 8,329, soaring 23 points.

Dull trading activities continued as the DSE turnover stood at just over Tk300 crore. Engineering continued to dominate the turnover chart for the third consecutive sessions, accounting for 18% of the total trade value.

Ceramics remained favourite sector as it gained highest almost 3%, led by RAK Ceramic that surged 3.4%.

Non-banking financial institutions came second with a rally of 0.7%, pulled up by DBH that yielded 6.7% return.

Heavyweight telecommunications sector fell 0.6%, extending its losing streak for the second consecutive sessions.

All other sectors including bank, engineering and textile ended flat.

Gainers, persistently dominated by low cap firms, took a strong lead over the losers as out of 313 issues traded, 153 closed positive, 107 negative and 53 remained unchanged.

Lanka Bangla Securities stated that DSE poised for an uncertain start on the day.

Lanka Bangla Finance was the most traded stock on the day, removing BSRM Limited that dominated the turnover chart over the last two sessions.
