Brazil has expressed its dismay over export ban of raw jute from Bangladesh.
In a letter to foreign ministry yesterday, the country said its businessmen was seeking alternatives of jute.
Bangladesh imposed ban on export of raw jute in December and jute importing countries including Germany, India and Pakistan requested the government to review the decision.
The total production of jute in the country is over 7.5m bales while the estimated demand is about 6.5 million bales.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque wrote to the jute secretary: “The decision is likely to have negative impact in future.”
Several buyers opened letters of credit before the ban, but many of those are not yet honoured, he added.
Brazil imports 100% of their jute demand from Bangladesh.
Jute Department Director Mohammad Kefayet Ullah said after assessing the total demand, the government would review the export decision at the end of March.
