Prosecution satisfied with Quasem verdict

The prosecution has expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the tribunal’s death sentence awarded to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

"We are happy with the verdict. The verdict was delivered beyond any social influence," Prosecutor Tureen Afroz said.

She also said the verdict proved that the judiciary is free from any influence.

On Tuesday, a five-member bench headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha upheld death penalty for Mir Quasem in one charge. However, it acquitted him of three other charges.

The Jamaat-e-Islami leader was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal on November 2, 2014.

Al-Badr commander Quasem, now a top financier of the party that opposed Bangladesh’s birth, played a key role behind the formation of al-Badr and led the atrocities at its torture camps in the city. Quasem appealed against the judgment on November 30, 2014 seeking acquittal.
