Mahmood Ali flies to Nepal to fix SAARC summit date

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali is flying to Nepal next week to sit with other SAARC foreign ministers to fix the date of next SAARC Summit and discuss other important issues.

The 18th SAARC Summit was held in Kathmandu in 2014 and it was decided then that the next summit would be held in Pakistan in 2016.

Pakistan through SAARC Secretariat proposed and distributed three sets of alternative dates for the summit, said a senior foreign ministry official.

All the three alternative dates are in November and it is expected that the SAARC foreign ministers would find out a suitable date, he said.

In the first set, the programming committee or SAARC director generals would sit for meeting on November 6 followed by standing committee or foreign secretary level talks on November 7 and 8.

The foreign minister would have their meeting on November 9 and the summit would be held on November 10 and 11.

In the same format, the second set proposed to have the programming committee meeting on November 13 and summit on November 17 and 18.

The third set proposed to have the programming committee on November 20 and summit on November 24 and 25.

Bangladesh is actively engaged with SAARC since its inception and the first SAARC summit was held in Dhaka in mid 80s.

This is a regional platform where Bangladesh and other South Asian countries interact with each other for the socio-economic development of the region, he said.

Considering all the factors, Bangladesh is expected to support one or more sets of dates for the summit, he added.

Till now, Sri Lanka supported the first and second set of dates while India supported only first set of dates. But, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan supported third set of dates.

The date for SAARC summit is fixed on the basis of consensus and president or prime minister, who holds the executive power, must attend the summit.
