Ticket sales halted as cricket fans go on rampage in Mirpur

The ticket selling for the upcoming Bangladesh-India Asia Cup final match has come to a halt after the ticket seekers engaged in a scuffle with police in the capital's Mirpur.

The incident took place in front of Mirpur 10 branch of United Commercial Bank on Saturday afternoon.

Garo woman's body found on Gulshan street

The body of a Garo woman has been found with stab injuries in the capital's Gulshan area.

The discovery of the body of the indigenous woman, aged around 28, was made on Saturday morning.

Republican 'Dump Trump' effort struggles to gain traction

A plan to block Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump struggled to gain traction on Friday as rival candidates rejected it, while Democrats reveled in the chaos they hoped would boost their chances of keeping the White House.

The country's top elected Republican, House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, said he was not interested in an effort to draft him into the White House race.

Quader: Civil society directly involved in 1/11

Awami League Presidium Member Obaidul Quader has alleged that several civil society members had played direct roles in the conspiracy to banish party chief Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from politics – the efforts known as “Minus Two Formula” – during the 2007-08 army-backed caretaker regime.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, claimed former prime minister Khaleda's greed and practice of politics of destruction, inspired civil society members and several political beneficiaries to conspire and create the 1/11.

Rescued cat now at agriculture minister's flat   

The cat, which was rescued from a towering three at the secretariat on Thursday, has been sheltered at the official apartment of Agriculture Minister Motia Chowdhury.

The PS of agriculture minister, Md Shahjalal, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The cat started following the driver of the minister, Asgor Ali, who was the first to hear it meowing and initiated the rescue plan, since it was rescued.

“Acknowledging the matter, the minister asked him [Asgor] to bring it to her flat in the Ramna Apartment Complex. The little cat has been named Felu by the minister and has finally become a member of her family.”

5 BRTA staff hurt as robbers attack Gazipur resort 

At least five officials of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) have been injured as robbers assaulted them during robbery in Bhovanipur Eco Resort under Gazipur Sadar upazila. The robbery took place early Friday.

Vegetable trader killed in Sylhet road accident 

A vegetable trader has been killed as a bus ran over him at Mirzabazar in Sylhet. Masud, 30, died on the spot in the accident that occurred around 9am Friday. Kotwali OC Sohel Ahmed said: “We have detained the bus driver and sent the body to Osmani Medical College morgue for autopsy.”

‘Depression drove mother to kill kids’

Nusrat resisted but was finally overpowered. Mahfuza then strangled Alvi.

Useless CCTV cameras monitor Dhaka 

Surveillance cameras are an integral part of crimes investigations. But except for those in Gulshan area of Dhaka, most CCTV cameras do not function properly while others stop working during blackouts. A Dhaka Metropolitan Police source said footage from these cameras were unclear and that there was no back-up system to keep them rolling during power cuts.

BNP gets venue to hold its council 

The BNP has received the confirmation from Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, to hold its sixth national council there on March 19. BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement at a press briefing in the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital yesterday.
