Bangladeshi domestic workers to get 1,200 Qatari riyals

Qatar's government has agreed on increasing the salary of Bangladeshi domestic helps working there to 1,200 riyals from the existing 900 riyals.

The matter was decided on Thursday at a joint working group meeting between the two countries at the capital's Prabasi Kalyan Bhaban.

Brigadier Mohammed Ahmed M Al Atiq Al Dossary, additional director general of passport department of Qatar, led the five-member Qatar delegation, while the Bangladesh team was led by Begum Shamsun Nahar, the acting secretary of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry.

The Qatar delegation expressed their eagerness to recruit skilled female workers from Bangladesh.

Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2022 and to ensure Qatar's National Development Planning Vision 2030, Qatar now needs a large number of foreign workers to complete their ongoing massive development projects.

The delegation wants to recruit nurses, engineers, teachers, IT workers and salespersons from Bangladesh, according to a press release from the ministry.

The joint working group also agreed to increase security and other facilities for Bangladeshi workers in Qatar and reduce their migration cost.

The two sides also discussed the matter of introducing a hotline to ease and increase labour migration between the two countries.

According to the government, Bangladesh has been sending manpower to Qatar since 1976, while 123,965 Bangladeshi workers went to Qatar in the last year alone.
