Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has lunched the “One Billion Coalition for Resilience” programme in Dhaka.
Visiting IFRC Secretary General El Hadji Amadou Gueye Sy launched the programme officially at the Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College auditorium in Dhaka on Monday.
“Resilience may mean different things in different contexts. In some context, it may refer to fighting drought and in another context it may refer to health issues. Resilience needs to vary from place to place and from individual to individual,” said the IFRC secretary general.
El Hadji was talking to the reporters at the press meet after the launching ceremony programme.
By 2025 the “One Billion Coaltion for Resilience” aims to engage at least one person in every household around the world in active steps towards enhancing community resilience.
Asked, why Bangladesh was chosen for launching this programme, the IFRC secretary general said Bangladesh has displayed excellent indicators in disaster preparedness and response and there has been inclusive leadership in this sector.
“Red Crescent and Bangladesh has a very long ties and Bangladesh is a very long time partner of the movement. Through this “One Billion Coalition for Resilience” movement, people will learn how to come out of vulnerability and can contribute to development,” he said.
Earlier in the day, El Hadji Amadou Gueye Sy delivered a speech on the changing humanitarian context and the role of Red Cross and Red Crescent at Dhaka University.
On Sunday, the first day of his visit, he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and several cabinet members.
