Show-cause notice to 1,209 schools over SSC extra fee

Education Ministry has served notices to a total of 1,209 school authorities to show cause why they should not be punished for collecting unusual fees from the SSC examinees.

Besides, explanation was sought from the respondents why the managing committees there would not be dissolved in line with the legal action for the offence.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid disclosed it at a press conference held in the secretariat on Sunday, saying he sent the notices on February 25 asking the schools to give reply within 30 days.

Finally legal action would be taken as per the High Court order in this regard if any is found guilty of violating its order, Nahid also said.

Earlier, the ministry received allegations of taking excess SSC enrolment fees from the examinees against a total of 3,038 schools across the country and it ordered them to refund the money within seven days.

Of those, 830 schools have already returned back the excess money and informed the development to the ministry as well.

Some 999 schools denied the allegation and the ministry has been running investigation into their claim.

But, the 1,209 schools did not give any reply despite the expiry of the deadline.

On January 6, the High Court has ordered the government to make schools across the country that charged additional fees from SSC candidates to refund them by January 20.
