If you've got a friend visiting from overseas, or a relative who's visiting after a long time, here's a quick list of things to-do to keep your schedule packed and your friend informed and entertained.
Cramp up in search of style Take your friend out to shop for clothes at Nurjahan Market (opposite Dhaka College), Gausea and New Market. Nurjahan Market has an extensive collection of clothes, be it regular everyday wear such as jeans and T-shirts or designer winter wear. If you're lucky and can manage to bargain hunt your way, you might find yourself in possession of a Zara jacket, a Ralph Lauren T-shirt or even some H&M goodies. By the end of the day both you and your friend will be knackered to the bone but will definitely have a cheap and chic collection of clothes to add to both your closets.
Check out Dhaka's finest heritage sites A day spent in old Dhaka does not necessarily have to involve you guzzling amazing food down your gullet. While it can and should be on your to-do list, let's not forget that old Dhaka is home to two of Dhaka’s finest architectural monuments, one of which is Ahsan Manzil the palace that once belonged to the Dhaka Nawab Family; the other is the Lalbagh Fort which is also a remnant of Mughal emperors. It's advisable to venture out into Old Dhaka over the weekend when traffic will be less of a headache.
Delve into Bangladesh's history The Liberation War Museum is a fantastic place to take your friend and make them see what we had to go through to achieve our independence. Another good idea maybe to take them to the Bangabandhu Museum in Dhanmondi and the National Museum to allow them to know more about the country's history.
Set a movie day Once you've got to take a look through the hustle and bustle of Dhaka's historical sites and culturally rich areas, take a breather and set out on a chilled movie outing. If Bashundhara City cineplex seems to far away, you can always go for the more accessible Jamuna Future Park. They've got a good line up of movies and usually show some of the newer releases. What's more is they've also got a bowling alley, an arcade and a food court. Make a day out of it.
Go on a rickshaw ride
Rickshaw rides are always a fun, exciting way to revisit streets both old and new. Whether your friend has or hasn't ever gotten on a rickshaw before – they surely will enjoy the experience. Recommended areas include the area near Dhaka University. While you're at it, you can also check out Bangla Academy, Shahid Minar, Curzon Hall and Suhrawardy Udayan.
