Moncho slams law enforcers

A faction of Gonojagoron Moncho has criticised the law enforcement agencies for failing to arrest assailants who hacked to death writer-blogger Avijit Roy a year ago on the Dhaka University campus.

Speaking at a discussion yesterday, Moncho spokesperson Imran H Sarker said: "Police claimed several times that they have identified the murderers, but they could not arrest anyone. Their insincerity is why they have failed.”

Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam on Thursday said police had found evidence of six people’s involvement in the killing and that banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team was behind the attack.

Machete-wielding assailants attacked Avijit, an engineer and administrator of Mukto-Mona blog who wrote against religious fundamentalism, and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, both US citizens of Bangladesh origin, on February 26 last year when they were leaving Ekushey book fair.

Moncho activists took out a torchlight procession towards the TSC last evening and placed floral wreath at the spot where Avijit was murdered.

Avijit’s father Prof Ajoy Roy said police told him that they identified several killers and were running DNA tests and scrutinising evidence from the crime scene.
