Thrown-away infant dies after 25 days

The 25-day-old infant who miraculously survived a four-storey fall died yesterday.

He died around 12:30pm at the neonatal unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

“We tried our best to save him, but he could not be saved,” said Khaja Abdul Gafur, assistant director (administration) of the DMCH.

The infant, who was referred to as Beauty’s Baby in the hospital, had a broken leg and complications with his facial bones, said Dr Manisha Banerjee, head of the eight-member medical board which treated the child.

He also had blood clots in his brain and had needed several blood transfusions.

His mother, 17-year-old Beauty Akhter, threw him out of a window of the flat where she was a domestic help, on the fourth floor of a residential building in the capital’s Bailey Road area on February 1, shortly after giving birth.

Beauty claimed to police that she had been raped and impregnated by her brother-in-law and threw her son away fearing the social stigma for giving birth out of wedlock.

She later filed a rape case with Ramna Model police station and is now with her family in Sirajganj.

Ramna police OC Moshiur Rahman said a number of people had applied to adopt the baby when news about him broke out. “Alas, now those applications are useless.”

Beauty and her family had been informed of the child’s death, but they refused to claim the body.

Later, police contacted Anjuman Mofidul Islam to take care of the baby’s burial, the OC said.
