IGP: Prevent crimes centring Union Parishad polls

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque has ordered the field-level officials to take all possible measures to prevent criminal activities during the upcoming Union Parishad elections.

He also asked the officers concerned to collect intelligence, asses possible risks including vote rigging, and solve the problems through community policing. The police chief made the comments during the monthly crime conference at the Police Headquarters on Wednesday.

Shahidul ordered the superintendents of district police and the OCs of police stations to prevent incidents of disappearance that might take place over rivalry. He also ordered the arrest of people for creating chaos during the polls.

The IGP also directed officials concerned to form committees all over the country with the help of the citizens to eliminate drug abuse and crimes by teenagers.

DMP Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam presented a report on the current trend of terrorism and the law enforcers' role in combating the crimes.

Also chief of the Detective Branch and the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes Unit, Monirul said that banned militant groups Ansarullah Bangla Team and Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were major challenge for the force.

He said that they had some limitations which should be addressed immediately for effective performance.
