Trashcan blitz to clean up capital

Dhaka South is to receive 5,000 public trashcans over the next six months as part of DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon's latest effort to win the war on garbage.

But the mayor binned the notion that any initiative of this kind could be a success unless the public plays along and cleans up its act.

“If you randomly throw your trash here and there, the city will remain dirty and insects and mosquitoes will flourish,” he said, urging the public to use the new dustbins.

“Everyone must cooperate with the authorities to turn Dhaka into a clean city. Without the public's help, no city corporation initiative can be fruitful,” Khokon said.

He said public spaces including footpaths, roads, parks, playgrounds, markets and shopping malls would be fitted with trash receptacles in order to clean the city up.

The Dhaka South City Corporation mayor announced the trashcan plan during the inauguration of a 15-day mosquito control programme at the National Press Club in the capital on Wednesday.

He also said streetlamps in Dhaka South would be converted to LED lighting within a year.

Khokon publicised his personal mobile telephone number – 0171156 4987 – and invited the public to contact him if they had any problems or concerns.
