TIB: Keep sports sector corruption free

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the government and the related stakeholders to take appropriate measures to keep the country's sports sector corruption free as it observes that the global sports sector has already been corrupted through political and business reasons.

The country needs a time-worthy act and specific organising structure to get rid of the match fixing, spot fixing and other corruption of the country's popular sport cricket, said Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of TIB.

He also said the cricket related all stakeholders should maintain the anti-corruption rules of International Cricket Council (ICC) to keep the sectors clean.

Iftekhar was speaking at a press conference organised to mark the Global Corruption Report-Sport launching on Tuesday.

The deficit of governance and existence of corruption exists in nearly all kinds of games including football, athletics, tennis, cricket, cycling, badminton, ice hockey and handball in the world.

This corruption practices extends to all levels, from International to regional and national due to the involvement of huge amount of money in the games, Iftekharuzzaman added at the briefing held at TIB office.

Mentioning the activities of foreign gamblers, punishment of a young cricketer for match fixing and illegal role of a club in Bangladeshi Premier League (BPL) in the country's cricket, TIB said those are barriers of ensuring good governance in Bangladesh's sport sector.

As of April 2015, at least 22 cricketers globally including one from Bangladesh has been penalised in different terms for corruptions including match-fixing and spot-fixing.

It also suggested the government to strengthen the Anti-corruption Unit of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) through formulating strong rules so that the country's most popular sport can go ahead without corruption.

An independent office of ombudsman for cricket should be set-up, empowered to investigate and prosecute allegations of corruption and irregularities in the game, the TIB chief also said in his written speech.

Replying to a query on the using cricket as the case study, the TIB boss said they have taken the game as it is the most popular game in Bangladesh.

In addition to the cricketers, TIB also recommended to comprise the board members of BCB with proper representation from across the country which is directed by BCB constitution.
