EBL compensates ATM card scam victims

The Eastern Bank Limited (EBL) has fully compensated its clients who suffered financial losses due to ATM (automated teller machine) cards forgery.

The bank has given a total Tk17.53 lakh among 24 depositors who lost money from their accounts due to recent ATM card scam, says a press release of Bangladesh Bank.

The affected five depositors received cheques at a programme which was held at Bangladesh Bank conference room on Thursday.

Eastern Bank had to close all its Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) for six hours — from 12pm to 6pm— on February 12 after some unusual transactions were reported by several account holders.

The preliminary investigation of the central bank found that some unscrupulous people including foreign nationals were involved in the skimming racket. The money was withdrawn from six ATM booths of three private banks.
