The mayor of Sreebardi municipality in Sherpur has been admitted to hospital after he sustained critical injuries in an attack by a leopard.
Abu Sayeed, also a local Awami League leader, was attacked by the leopard that came down from a hill near the border with India on Wednesday morning and hid in a forest under the municipality's Jaalkata area.
Locals later rescued the mayor from the leopard and beat it to death in the presence of hundreds of onlookers.
Sayeed was first taken to a hospital in Sreebardi but was later transferred to Sherpur District Hospital.
For better treatment, the mayor was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Sherpur Civil Surgeon Dr Anwar Hossain.
S Alam, officer-in-charge of Sreebardi police station, said the tiger measured around 4-4.5 feet in length.
