Rana Plaza: 2 get bail on surrender

A Dhaka court has granted bail to two absconding accused in a murder case filed over the collapse of Rana Plaza that killed at least 1,135 lives in 2013.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahjadi Tahmida passed the order on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, the lawyer of Inspecting Engineer Shohidul Islam and Yusuf Ali filed a bail petition with the court.

On February 8, the same court sent Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) Building Inspector

Awlad Hossain to jail rejecting his bail plea in the murder case filed over the collapse.

On June 1 last year, the CID charged 41, including Sohel Rana, for the deaths in the collapse. A total of 18 people, including 17 from the murder case, were charged for violating the building code.

The nine-storey Rana Plaza that housed a number of ready-made garment factories, collapsed on April 24, 2013, killing 1,136 people, mostly workers, and injuring 1,169.

The murder case was filed by police and the code violation case by the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk). CID investigated both the cases.

The family of a victim also filed a separate murder case with a Dhaka court who had ordered CID to do the investigation for this case alongside the case filed by the police.

Investigators said that Sohel Rana, a local leader of the ruling party’s youth front Jubo League, adopted unfair means to secure the permission to build Rana Plaza with a Tk5 crore loan from Jamuna Bank.
