Bangladesh envoy summoned by Pakistan Foreign Ministry

Islamabad has summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan in retaliation of summoning its envoy by Bangladesh foreign ministry early last week.

A diplomat of the Bangladesh mission in Islamabad confirmed Dhaka Tribune that the high commissioner was summoned yesterday late afternoon and handed over a note verbale.

He was summoned as retaliation measure of summoning Pakistan High Commissioner early last week, he said.

Bangladesh Foreign Ministry on February 2 summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Shuja Alam and strongly protested the harassment of a Bangladeshi official in Islamabad and dubious activities of Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka.

He was handed over a note verbale protesting the incidents.

Acting Foreign Secretary Khurshed Alam and Secretary (Bilateral) Mizanur Rahman had an hour-long meeting with the Pakistan envoy and expressed their displeasure.

A Bangladeshi official at the Bangladesh High Commission in Pakistan Jahangir Hossain was forcefully taken by plainclothesmen and detained for about seven hours.

The incident happened one and half hours after a Pakistani official of Pakistan High Commssion Abrar Ahmed Khan in Dhaka was released from police custody. He was detained by Detective Branch for his dubious activities.

When Abrar was taken into custody, the Pakistan high commissioner informed the Foreign Ministry about the detention of his staff and he was assured that Abrar would be released.

Eventually, after the intervention of the Foreign Ministry Abrar was released, but to the foreign ministry’s surprise, the high commission issued a press statement late at night.
