Bangladesh bagged one silver and eight bronze medals in the second day of the South Asian Games to move to fourth position in the medals tally. The 12th edition of the Games is now being held in Shillong and Guwahati, India.
Veteran weightlifter Molla Shabira earned Bangladesh their first medal in the event when she won bronze in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at the Bhogeshwari Phukanani Indoor stadium in Guwahati. Shabira lifted a total of 143kg (snatch-63kg, jerk- 80kg) to finish behind Saikhom Mirabai of India and Dinusha Hansani of Sri Lanka.
Another Bangladeshi weightlifter, Mustain Billah, won his first ever medal in the SA Games when he bagged bronze in the men’s 62kg category, lifting 225kg in total. This is the first time that the women’s weightlifting event has been added to the SA Games.
Bangladesh earned their first silver medal in the event courtesy wrestler Rina Akter. Rina grabbed second place in the women’s 60kg wrestling event. Bangladesh wrestlers won two bronze medals as well.
Four bronze medals have been won through the swimming discipline. Romana Akter clinched third spot in the women’s 200m breaststroke while Shariful Islam finished at the same position in the men’s 200m breaststroke. Mahfizur Rahman claimed bronze in the men’s 200m freestyle.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh team comprising Rafiqul Islam, Mahfizur, Anik Islam and Ashif Reza won bronze in the men’s 4*100m freestyle relay. Elsewhere, Bangladesh women’s football team will play their second match against Sri Lanka today at 4pm. They lost to Nepal 3-0 in their opening game.
