The government has given approval for a new law, expanding the scope for dual citizenship for expatriate Bangladeshi nationals.
The approval came at the Monday’s regular cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at Prime Minister's Office, reports BSS.
The cabinet has given its final approval to the draft of the Citizenship Law, 2016, said Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam after the meeting.
He said the proposed law has been framed by consolidating existing the Citizenship Act 1951 and the Bangladesh Citizenship Temporary Provisions Order 1972 and rearranging their (two laws) back dated issues and incompleteness.
Alam said the law has six chapters and 28 sections which highlight the process for gaining citizenship, disqualification of getting citizenship, surrender and dissolution of citizenship.
The law incorporated and expanded the scope for getting dual citizenship by the expatriate Bangladeshi nationals since the expatriate Bangladeshis staying in the USA and UK earlier enjoyed such facility, he continued.
The cabinet secretary said the expatriate Bangladeshis staying in all the countries that Bangladesh has diplomatic ties except the citizens of the states that are declared "banned" through Bangladesh government's gazette notification would be able to get the dual citizenships.
